"After the apprenticeship you had to have at least a first mate's certificate or a master’s certificate to return to become a pilot"

After the apprenticeship you had to have at least a first mate's certificate or a master’s certificate to return to become a pilot, so you finished the apprenticeship and you were there on your own just, you had to find your own way and get your qualifications, so I was at sea for nine years altogether and I left in 1976. And there was a vacancy then for a pilot, I returned to the pilot service and became a third class pilot in 1976.
