The future for piloting on the Tyne
"Oh I think the future is good. Piloting has just evolved"
Oh I think the future is good. Piloting has just evolved. I mean there’s been pilots ever since there’s been, you know, ever since man sort of went to sea in ships, so I think the art of piloting will always be there- it evolves. We’re getting bigger and bigger ships and we’re doing the job maybe in slightly different ways, and technology is advancing to the fact that we may eventually finish up sitting in a room and controlling ships remotely from the shore. But pilotage will exist in some form for an awful long time, but the port as a port is having a bit of a resurgence, so, certainly, in the next generation or two, I think we’ve got anything to worry about.
