Grandmother's routine

The women worked far harder than the men if you study their... what they did! They really did work far harder than the men. That is, I don’t know when they had time to sleep because from the crack, my grandmother used to get up at half past four in the morning, to get their breakfast, to get them off to sea for the first, to get the line shot, because they fished to long lines- it was only nets for the salmon in them days. And then while they were out she would be preparing their breakfast for when they come back and getting ready to go to her own fish which she sold, you know from a creel, she used to sell hers in Blyth. And I think she had to catch a train to get to Blyth, train to Monkseaton and then one to Blyth, and she had to be coming back for four o’clock time to get nets, lines baited for the next day.
Now there were three lines to bait every, every day. And each line had 500 hooks on, so that’s 1500 hooks to bait. She didn’t them all herself, but she used to skin the mussels. That I believe was done after they went to sea, you know, she did the mussels ready to bait the lines at tea time. The carpets were lifted every day for them to bait the lines, and then house was scrubbed, the room was scrubbed everyday, and then she used to make the tea after that, and after that, she used to knit their jumpers and knit their socks, so I don’t know when she had any time to herself.
She used to go to the mission, you know, the Fisherman’s Mission and she loved that, you know, and singing and that. She was, she collected for the lifeboat, my granddad was in the crew, he was coxswain in Cullercoats and Tynemouth. And she collected for them, you know, she’d- I don’t when they had time for themselves. But she lived to be 87 so hard work didn’t kill anybody.
