"My oldest brother, Albert, he was in the lifeboat and fishing"
My oldest brother, Albert, he was in the lifeboat and fishing and he fished with Raymond Oliver, you know, Robert’s dad, they fished together. My brother was part owner of the James Denyer boat. And when Albert and Robert gave up fishing they went to work down on the quay which is a lot easier life because fishing isn’t an easy life. My father’s last words to my mother before he died was, “do not let my brother Brian got to fishing. Make sure he learns a trade.” So he worked, went into the shipyards as a boiler maker. He worked at Swan Hunters and he ended his career- after Swan Hunters closed he ended his career as a new build supervisor for Golf Oil and he travelled over the world, you know, supervising for the owners Golf Oil, when they were building the new ships. So my dad was right, wasn’t he- “don’t let him go to the fishing.”
