"Brian, He was, he was a helmsman down Cullercoats boat and he got an award for bravery"

Brian, He was, he was a helmsman down Cullercoats boat and he got an award for bravery. His name’s on the boathouse door- what year was it, Bill, Brian got his…? Was it ’90? I cannot remember the year. My son never tells you anything and it was other people that had to tell us.

But it was the day the surfers were caught, and the boat he was in, it broke down twice but he kept going and he got it going and they saved everybody. He got an award for bravery and expert seamanship, he got a Thanks on Vellum, and you get a proper citation on the lifeboathouse doors- there’s two, on for Raymond, Robert Oliver and one for my lad Brian. And then he was helmsman there and then he went along to Tynemouth. As he, he’s just resigned from Tynemouth but he was second coxswain there- he was crew at first and then second coxswain, one of four second coxswains.

But they’ve all got a good lifeboat record. My grandfather was 40 years, 17 at Tynemouth, the rest crew and coxswain at Cullercoats. My great grand father has 52 years, my brother had 20 years, and my father had 24, my dad’s brother had 40, another brother had 42- if you add them, that’s a lot of years!
