Changes in Cullercoats
"As the boats disappeared, a way of life disappeared"
As the boats disappeared, a way of life disappeared, you know. It’s, as the place expanded, you see at one time, when I was a little girl, you knew everybody, and everybody knew you and all about you, but there’s none of that today. They do have the community and the Community Centre, but I would say it’s changed a lot, you know.
And then 1972 when they pulled the old village down and I can’t say they did a very good job with the new one, and it was another blow when the Bay Hotel went. Before long, it will be unrecognisable, it’ll only be the harbour and the piers and lifeboat house that’s the same. That’s all my dad would recognise today. And even the boathouse has changed- it’s bigger!
