Karl learnt to dive through his father Stan. He grew up with diving with his brother Michael. Karl manages The Diving Centre Ltd, providing the diving community with equipment, training and advice.

Karl was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 17 January 2006. The interview took place at Discovery Museum History office and lasted 38 minutes and 50 seconds.

People have a misconception- the water, underneath the water is often called the silent world- well, it isn’t silent. It’s just different. People can’t talk which is a hell of a blessing, sometimes, really, you know, you get away from it all. But you’ve probably seen the whales and Richard Attenborough and dolphins and everything, well, those sounds you can hear just like that, as clear as that- those screeching sounds underneath.

I’ve been in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and had a school of dolphin just swimming around me and you can hear those sounds, and, you know, you could just stay there all day, just, that makes it- what a privilege, it is, at least having had all them. I’ve swum with sharks as well, but they’re, you know, they don’t bark or anything, they’re just completely silent and intimidating. But again, it’s enthralling to watch them.

Even off, off the North Easy coast, in the month of May we get all the birds nesting and everything, you get the guillemots which they dive and swim underneath the water, so you’d be swimming along and you would be 10, 15 metres or more, and you’ve got these birds just sort of flying alongside of you looking for fish and you hear that squawking sound that they would make underneath.

You hear metallic sounds very, very clearly but what you can’t do, travel the, sounds travels a lot faster underneath the water- it’s about four time faster, so what you can’t do is tell the direction to any great degree.
