Karl learnt to dive through his father Stan. He grew up with diving with his brother Michael. Karl manages The Diving Centre Ltd, providing the diving community with equipment, training and advice.

"Pretty good- they’ve changed over the years but overall still pretty good"
Pretty good- they’ve changed over the years but overall still pretty good. There’s quite a diverse array of life in there, from fish to crab, lobster, seals, dolphin, whale, during the summer season. And you can go to somewhere like the Farne islands and dive with the seals, which is a great privilege. You know, the great big animal underneath the water and he’s swimming alongside of you- there’s not many places in the world you can go and do that. And you still get shoals of fish, big shoals of fish during the season as well. Just as you would- you know, you’ve seen the sardines run off South Africa or something- it’s possible to be in a shoal of fish as thick as that underneath the water and that’s just off St Mary’s Island, Beadnell and Seahouses, Craster. The conditions back in the 80s were quite affected by lots of sewage coming out. You had like a silt coming off the Tyne and everything, but since in the last 20 years there have been great strides made in purification and sewage treatment, so now you don’t get that.
