"After two years in the machine shop I then went down to the erecting shop"

After two years in the machine shop I then went down to the erecting shop and I was put on one of the specialised jobs which was the scavenge pump, which is the pump which provides the air, this is before turbo chargers, Doxford engines had a mechanically driven pump which used to pump the air into the engine, and I stayed there until I left in 1958. I left there and I went, I transferred to Palmer’s, Hebburn on the Tyne to get further experience before I going to sea.
