Keith Halliday

Keith was born in 1938 and went to school in Ryhope. He began his apprenticeship at Doxford's in 1954 and moved to Palmers Hebburn in 1958. Keith spent seven years at sea as a marine engineer before he returned to work in the Doxford's Service Department in 1970.
Keith was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 7 December 2005. The interview took place at Beamish Regional Resource Centre and lasted 22 minutes and 43 seconds.

In 1970, I applied for a job as Service Engineer at Doxford’s, by that time I had been at sea for some six, seven years, I had worked in, again, at Palmer’s, Hebburn ship repair yard, so I had, you know, quite a lot of experience of ship repair. And I was employed then as a Service Engineer until, until the Service Department closed, and then I had all the jobs in quality assurance until the Doxford Engines was finished in 1991. And from there I went to Britparts, again, doing Doxford service work and also selling spares, until they closed the Newcastle office and then I, with two other colleagues, I started up business, again doing Doxford’s service until I retired in 2003.
