Keith Halliday

Keith was born in 1938 and went to school in Ryhope. He began his apprenticeship at Doxford's in 1954 and moved to Palmers Hebburn in 1958. Keith spent seven years at sea as a marine engineer before he returned to work in the Doxford's Service Department in 1970.
Keith was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 7 December 2005. The interview took place at Beamish Regional Resource Centre and lasted 22 minutes and 43 seconds.

"It was like one big family"
It was like one big family. It was, there was quite a lot of, you know, people always had relatives there, you know, there were sons and grandfathers and all this sort of thing. I mean, I had, well, I used to call him an uncle, he was an uncle by marriage, I knew him, and as I say, there were other people. There were much bigger family networks within the place; it was a very, very friendly place. There was never any, it wasn’t really a sweatshop as such, as long as you did your little bit and kept your nose clean, everything was alright.
