Keith Halliday

Keith belongs to: The Doxford Engine Friends Association

Keith was born in 1938 and went to school in Ryhope. He began his apprenticeship at Doxford's in 1954 and moved to Palmers Hebburn in 1958. Keith spent seven years at sea as a marine engineer before he returned to work in the Doxford's Service Department in 1970.

Keith was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 7 December 2005. The interview took place at Beamish Regional Resource Centre and lasted 22 minutes and 43 seconds.

Force of habit now, I still have my toilet bag already packed. I leave it in, if you go in my bathroom, the, my toilet bag’s on the top of the toilet cistern and it’s got everything in it I need, so I used to just have to pick it up.

I mean to say I don’t have it now but when I was doing that job, I used to have a case which was three quarters packed and I only had to put, you know, one or two bits and pieces in. And the main thing of course was several boiler suits and engine room shoes which was what you wore most of the time you were away anyway.
