Keith Halliday

Keith was born in 1938 and went to school in Ryhope. He began his apprenticeship at Doxford's in 1954 and moved to Palmers Hebburn in 1958. Keith spent seven years at sea as a marine engineer before he returned to work in the Doxford's Service Department in 1970.
Keith was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 7 December 2005. The interview took place at Beamish Regional Resource Centre and lasted 22 minutes and 43 seconds.

"Well, it’s, it was started, what, about three years ago now"
Well, it’s, it was started, what, about three years ago now and Maurice Clyde who runs it approached me and said would I like to become a member and I said, “yes, definitely.” The main thing is we’ve got this engine at Beamish Museum in the stores which was one of the last engines to be built in the Doxford engine works and it’s more or less just making sure that it doesn’t deteriorate any worse than it is. And it’s, you know, quite a nice social thing to have- it keeps my hand in with work on the engine, it’s nice to see, you know, this thing is being preserved, and I also meet compatriots who I’ve worked with in the past and also people who are new to me and we get on quite well. It’s a nice thing. It’s four meetings a year and five or six visits to Beamish to do things on the engine.
