Mary grew up around North Shields Fish Quay. Her father was a fisherman and she has many memories of both the Fishermen's Mission and North Shields Fish Quay. Mary still helps out at the Mission.

Growing up in North Shields
"You’ve got Smiths Docks, you’ve now got the Royal Quays"
You’ve got Smiths Docks, you’ve now got the Royal Quays, well, there’s a bank that goes down and it goes to what was Smiths Dock dry dock, and we used to live in Dean Street, Dean Terrace right at the top of that bank. So you could go to my friend’s house who lived upstairs and you could see the docks, all the wood yards and up. And then for a couple of months a year the place used to ming and you didn’t understand what it was and, but you could go and stand on the bank top and see these bright orange boats which were the whalers. And I think they used to come, probably until the early 60s I think and then it sort of, like, went out and a lot of the guys, mainly from South Shields really, used to go away in the whalers for ten months of the year. And when they came, they stunk, if the wind used to come here. And when they had first come in, you knew
