Maurice Clyde

Maurice left school in 1955 and started his apprenticeship at Doxford's in February 1956. After a motorbike accident in 1958 Maurice worked in the Drawing Office until the closure of the engine and shipyards in 1989.
Maurice was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 7 December 2005. The interview took place at Beamish Regional Resource Centre and lasted 27 minutes and 41 seconds.

The sea... well that was the whole point of writing to Doxford's when I was 14 years old asking if I could be taken on as an apprentice. I wanted to get away to sea and see the world, in those days you didn't go abroad on your holidays you very rarely went a few miles from where you lived for a holiday. I remember going to my Aunty's which is 30 minutes away for a holiday, and I thought it was great because it was different town. But it was only 30 minutes drive away, today, but on the bus you used to have to go from one big town to another big town to get to the far west of the county. I thought that was great when I was 11 years old. But today the World's your oyster, you can jump on a plane for a few pounds, well in those days if you could get away to sea as an enginner you would see the whole World and getting paid for it.
