"I applied for an apprenticeship on my last year at school in 1954"

I applied for an apprenticeship on my last year at school in 1954, and I was accepted as an apprentice at Doxford’s to be starting in the stores in February 1956. Not being quite 16 you sort spent six months in the stores, or messenger, or whatever so you became familiar with all the various departments that you’d be serving your apprenticeship in. And this I did on February 6th 1956, starting in the light machine shop, sawing six inch bar to various lengths to be used in the turning bay and from there I would go on to various other departments spending three months in each. This was to familiarise with everything that was required on a Doxford engine.
