Mel was born in Tynemouth. From childhood he has always had an interest in boats and the sea. Mel has a coble, which he has restored. He joined The Coble and Keelboat Society through a friend. It is a good way to find out information and make contacts.

It was built in 1946, Harrison’s of Amble, big boat builders, built to replace one at Dunkirk, apparently, with the compensation money. The original boat had been co-opted by the navy, ended up taking people on the beaches at Dunkirk. On the train coming back after the war, apparently, it got damaged and beyond repair, so with the compensation money, I mean this is the story I’ve been told, I believe it’s true, with the compensation money, he ordered a brand new boat from Harrison’s in 1946.
