What makes it so good? Well, the scientific reason it’s so good is because it’s so rough in the winter, there’s so much oxygen in the water, and because there’s so much oxygen in the water, there’s so much life in the water and then you get the visibility in the summer season, so you get visibility in the season between 30 and 60 feet, or between 10 and 20m, whichever way you want to look at it, and the life is so varied from orca killer whales in the summer where you get the same pod comes back to feed on the seals, you get the dolphins coming back.
Not six months ago I was playing with a dolphin in Beadnell Bay. It was jumping across the top of the boat. Even as a kid I remember the dolphin at Seahouses. You’ve got lobster, you’ve got crab, you’ve got fish of every description.
And then you’ve got the wreck diving because we’ve got such a rough coast we’ve got fantastic wrecks and because of the advances in technology with computers and with satellite navigation, wrecks have become plottable, findable, and easier to go to, so where it was a bit of an Indian art where you needed to be a master of all the tasks to find the wreck, and you had to line up this with that and the other thing, it had to be the right day. Now you go “beep beep beep bop bop bop” and you’re right above it.
