Paul was born in Cullercoats. His family were in fishing and merchant navy. Paul got his first boat when he was 13. He has made a living from fishing and sign painting.

Green was a…never used to wear green or anything that reminded, you know, anything to do with the land, four legged animals were never mentioned especially ones to do with bacon. You wouldn’t whistle, if you wanted wind you’d whistle, like, you’d whistle up the wind, opening tins of stuff the wrong way up, it’s to do with the Devil or something like that, you know, from down below. Boiled eggs, you never, never take them aboard. It’s all to do with Easter and all this sort of thing. Different villages had different ones, really. Eyemouth men would never mention salt.
