Peter was born in Simpson Street in Cullercoats. From an early age he wanted to be a fisherman and lifeboatman. Peter fished from a coble, herring drifters and trawlers.

Growing up in Cullercoats
"Like I said from the very beginning I was born in Simpson Street which is only two hops and a jump and you’re back in Cullercoats Bay"
Like I said from the very beginning I was born in Simpson Street which is only two hops and a jump and you’re back in Cullercoats Bay and you played around the boats and you went to listen to the old men talking down the watch house, and their experiences, and it was great, going to sea, being a fisherman. But I think what made my mind up really, was when the lifeboat turned over in 1939, you were classed as heroes, you know, in the lifeboat service then, and I wanted to be hero.
