Peter was brought up in Newcastle. His mother came from Seahouses and the family would holiday there. Peter's father made him a rowing boat when he was 11 and he spent his time in the harbour with his friends.
Peter was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 16 February 2006. The interview took place at Ouseburn Heritage Centre and lasted 14 minutes and 58 seconds.

I needed to find out about how they were when they used to sail them occasionally, I wanted to see them with the sail up, for all it would have very rarely had the sail up and an old gentleman up there helped me a lot, he did sketches of the, the rope work and how the, the arrangement of the sail and things like that and I managed to get all of the equipment.
But I have to say it wasn’t really easy sailing because there was nobody to show me how. Sadly, the old man died within a few months having told me this information, so I had been very lucky that he had passed that on to me, because so many opportunities like that just don’t arise but, then I had to sort of teach myself and find somebody else interested. I couldn’t pretend to be any good at sailing, but I do get some pleasure going out with the sails up and going around the Farne Islands in the summer.
