Peter was brought up in Newcastle. His mother came from Seahouses and the family would holiday there. Peter's father made him a rowing boat when he was 11 and he spent his time in the harbour with his friends.
Peter was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 16 February 2006. The interview took place at Ouseburn Heritage Centre and lasted 14 minutes and 58 seconds.
A memorable day out

I had a lovely day at Seahouses a couple of years ago, my mother was up there and I think she had always disapproved of my having boats, you know, I was going out with some friends one day and she said, I was amazed when she said, “you never invite me out,” and I thought she completely disapproved.
So I was pleased to take her out on the boat and it was a perfect day and because she comes from there it was nice to see the way it brought back memories to her. At soon as she was out in the sea there she was talking about when she had been away about ten years old in a coble going to the islands for a picnic and she was suddenly telling about when they took the Gingham tablecloth and the sandwiches with their mother and whatnot, and had a picnic in the islands, and it was wonderful to hear what is was like back in the 1920s.
It’s nice that with old people sometimes you get them in the right situation and it brings back memories and we had a wonderful day. It was such a calm day, we just sat, had a picnic on the boat and we sat there for half an hour and the boat hardly moved sitting in the islands, one of those days when the sea’s glassy smooth, plenty of birds and a few seals about. That’s what makes it all worthwhile.
