Peter was brought up in Newcastle. His mother came from Seahouses and the family would holiday there. Peter's father made him a rowing boat when he was 11 and he spent his time in the harbour with his friends.

The Coble and Keelboat Society- that was quite useful. They came up to Seahouses a few years ago for a sea shanty festival and I saw the stall on the pier and I met Edgar Redman, their secretary, and that was very useful because he was able to put me in touch with other people with an interest in the boats and I thought nobody was, really. And we had a meeting of the society, an annual general meeting, down the coast at Hartlepool and as a result of that we found out all the ones in the Tyneside area and up in Northumberland and started to have monthly meetings and that’s been tremendously valuable because we tell each other where boats are, who might want to sell one, how to help restore a boat, exchange photographs, information about repairing them, so it’s been very useful and we get together every month and it’s good just to get together in a pub and have a drinks and have a good chatter, so that’s encouraged an interest in the boats enormously in the last, last couple of years.
