Ray was born in Moon Street, South Shields. After leaving school Ray went to cookery school before going to sea with the merchant navy in March 1937. He left the sea in 1953.
Ray was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 30 November 2005. The interview took place at the Interviewee's living room and lasted 39 minutes and 44 seconds.

"Well that ship, I was on for nearly two years- it was a good feeding ship"
Well that ship, I was on for nearly two years- it was a good feeding ship, the ESSO tankers. You had, for breakfast you had cereal, curry and rice, bacon and egg, fried bread. They had corn flakes, they had porridge, and of course the curry and rice, bacon and egg. That was every morning. Lunchtime they had soup, you had a different meat nearly every day and a sweet at the same time. The only thing you didn’t have in, what they called dinner- you didn’t have soup. They just had two dishes- the main dish and a sweet.
