Ray was born in Moon Street, South Shields. After leaving school Ray went to cookery school before going to sea with the merchant navy in March 1937. He left the sea in 1953.
Ray was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 30 November 2005. The interview took place at the Interviewee's living room and lasted 39 minutes and 44 seconds.
Cookery training
"The training I got was only at the cookery school"
The training I got was only at the cookery school, it was the only training I really got. I only sailed once as second cook, and I was a better cook than the cook was, and I was just starting.
Well, the training school they didn’t teach you much about cooking. What you did, they taught you how to set a table, how to wait on the table and after the meals were cooked by the ones who were training as cooks, the pool men, what we called the pool men, used to come in, used to have their meals and you waited on them. And that’s the only training I had until I went on the ship. And as far as cooking was concerned, I went, I was at the cookery school for a while, and then I had to go to the cookery school and I was there for three weeks getting my cook’s ticket and later on I went back for a diploma and I was the first one to get a diploma and I was getting more money a month then than the steward, so they were very jealous!
