The fishing community
"Fishermen live in two worlds, if you can put it that way"
Fishermen live in two worlds, if you can put it that way. When they’re out at sea, they’re bitter enemies- “we’ve got to catch more fish than Fred,” and Fred’s got to catch more fish than Joe, you know what I mean, but once they come in, they’ll go into the pub and they’ll talk about that day’s catches, or their trip, depending on, you know. Some of the boats used to do long trips, some of them short trips, and others only used to fish for days out. The ones with the days out used to sit and talk about it, “well, where did you catch them?” you know, this sort of thing, but no trouble at all amongst them- you know, occasionally the odd drunken brawl but that was usually a couple of deck hands fishing, fighting over one of the old dears out the pub, like.
But otherwise, amongst fishermen in general, the best way to describe it is, if there’s a fisherman in trouble, you know, say his boat's in trouble at sea, he’s broken down or he’s on fire or whatever, his boat’s sinking, you’ll always find the boats, the fishing boats especially, come from all over to help.
