Ray was born in Sunderland into a fishing family. He has fished since the age of 3. He worked from North Shields and Grimsby. Ray is now retired and continues to fish in his leisure time.

Adjusting to life ashore
"Well, when I first retired, you’re going to think this is funny, I know, I used to lie in bed at night and toss and turn"
Well, when I first retired, you’re going to think this is funny, I know, I used to lie in bed at night and toss and turn, you know, once I had been ashore about a year or a couple of years. And I used to say to the wife, “stand at the end of the bed and just gently rock it slowly and go brum brum brum”- the noise of the engine.
We could be steaming along- I’d be lying on my bunk, or even fishing, and I could hear the tone of the engine change. If something went wrong, or if we came fast on an object on the sea bed, if something went wrong in the engine room and the engine started to loose power, I was awake instantly.
And it took me a long, long time to adjust to not having that noise in the background- just the throbbing of the engine.
