Changes at Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade
"It has, we’ve become a lot busier"
It has, we’ve become a lot busier. When I first started and first got the pager on the initial response team, we were I think about four jobs a year. Last year, 2005, we had about 111 jobs. And it’s, we’ve just got busier and busier as time’s gone on. We’ve forged a better relationship with coastguard. I think when I joined there was very much a, say, some of the people at coastguard, and some of the people here- there had been some bad feeling which caused a few, sort of, dodgy moments, which meant we possibly weren’t quite as trusted as possibly we should have been. Bit of a- I’ve chatted to the lads since at coastguard that I’ve become friends with, and there is certainly a view of, well, it’s sort of the coastguard version of Dad’s Army- all the old lads with their grey beards. But myself and some of the new lads decided to try and forge a better relationship with coastguard, and since then we’ve been called out more and more and we’ve become part of the overall team, so although we’re separate from coastguard, we’re part of the same family.
