Joining the RNLI
"Why I joined? It wasn’t really a case of why I joined"
Why I joined? It wasn’t really a case of why I joined, wanting to join or anything. It was more or less part and parcel of being a fisherman in Cullercoats. My father was coxswain, there had been six generations of my family in Cullercoats, in the lifeboat and growing up it was just, from being three, four years old, I got a run in the all weather lifeboat they used to have at that age, and just being involved all the time, and it was just part of my life, rather than…If I didn’t turn up I used to get a clip off, by the head by my dad. “Why weren’t you down the beach?” and stuff.
