Robert Oliver was born in Cullercoats. From the age of 15 he fished from Cullercoats and North Shields, working from a coble in the summer and trawlers in the winter. He is the Leading Helmsman for the Cullercoats RNLI.

Well, Iím also the station mechanic here, so Mondays I generally come down after the boatís been off for the weekend. I wash, wash the boat down and any kind of little bits of maintenance that need doing, any kind of problems weíve had with the boat, and you try and get them fixed as soon as possible. If itís a major problem, like if the boat came ashore with engine trouble today or something, then it would have to get sorted out there and then for to get it, the boat back on full service in case we need it for real.
