"Many a time, I’ve been out on a search, you know at that stage, you know, you are realist"
Many a time, I’ve been out on a search, you know at that stage, you know, you are realist, you realise that the casualty is 90% of the time is going to be expired, so you know you’re looking for a body and you want somebody to find the body so that you can give the body back to the family and that at least they’ve got something, you know. It’s closure, if you like.
And, it’s not good, you don’t feel all that well. And then somebody will come up, they’ll always be a wisecrack, emotions running the way that they are- everything gets exaggerated, so you get exaggerated laughter, and the like. But I think there’s been a few brigades people and few lifeboat people who have had a good cry to themselves on occasions. It does get a hold of you- I suppose now people can council, I mean, that never used to happen- you used to just get along with it, you know, “I’ll get on with it and sort of sort it out yourself,” you know.
