Community and camaraderie
"Many a time, Iíve been out on a search, you know at that stage, you know, you are realist"
Many a time, Iíve been out on a search, you know at that stage, you know, you are realist, you realise that the casualty is 90% of the time is going to be expired, so you know youíre looking for a body and you want somebody to find the body so that you can give the body back to the family and that at least theyíve got something, you know. Itís closure, if you like.
And, itís not good, you donít feel all that well. And then somebody will come up, theyíll always be a wisecrack, emotions running the way that they are- everything gets exaggerated, so you get exaggerated laughter, and the like. But I think thereís been a few brigades people and few lifeboat people who have had a good cry to themselves on occasions. It does get a hold of you- I suppose now people can council, I mean, that never used to happen- you used to just get along with it, you know, ďIíll get on with it and sort of sort it out yourself,Ē you know.
