Sam grew up in Tynemouth where he began surfing. He has gone on to become one of Britain's top surfers. He competes in competitions around the world.

"There’s a few. I could tell you them all, but obviously, again, I’d have to kill you"
There’s a few. I could tell you them all, but obviously, again, I’d have to kill you. But the ones that aren’t so secret, there’s one up by St Mary’s Lighthouse. I mean, the north east is actually renowned nationwide for its reefs. It’s quite rare to have specific rock formations conducive to creating waves of high quality. There’s one up at St Mary’s Lighthouse, and there’s actually one at the Black Middens as well.
And the Black Middens are a kind of rock formation in the middle of the mouth of the River Tyne. Just, you have the two big, big piers that go out to sea, and right in the middle of them, kind of sheltered, is this headland of rocks that used to just claim a couple of ships a year allegedly, but, when the waves get huge, I mean, at Long Sands when the waves are 10, 12, 15 feet, they kind of wrap around the piers and come into the Black Middens and they’ll be eight to ten foot, maybe, but the wave, it’s just a fantastic wave because the way the rocks give the waves definition and shape.
So it’s strange to think that we’re sitting out there surfing these waves when so many poor souls have lost their lives on them, so it’s kind of a bit of a melancholy place to surf. But it’s a couple of degrees warmer than everywhere else because of all the pollution in the river.
