"It’s got a lot better, it used to be awful"

It’s got a lot better, it used to be awful. I mean, we used to surf in the Black Middens and you could almost guarantee that you’d be off school for the next two or three days because you’d be ill. You know, you’d get sort of stomach upsets, or, I don’t know the exact terms of the kinds of ailments that we got but there were some serious things floating around that river, and you’d see, you’d see kind of sanitary towels and all sorts going past you, but now, and that’s why I guess there was no salmon in the river for a few years. You know, there was a huge outcry about ten years ago that a river which used to be overflowing with salmon was now absolutely devoid of any, but now in recent times the salmon have returned, the water’s got a bit cleaner again.
