Growing up in Tynemouth
"I just remember growing up as a kid, you know, because the bus that took me back and forwards from school used to come round the sea front"
I just remember growing up as a kid, you know, because the bus that took me back and forwards from school used to come round the sea front and I clearly remember sort of as this time of year comes round, September, October time, the days start getting shorter and, you kind of, your school finishes at quarter to four and you’re on the bus and it’s starting to get dark and you see perfect waves, because in the wintertime was when you usually to get the best swells around here. I just remember clearly sitting on the bus with my face pressed against the window just hating the fact that I had to go to school because there were perfect waves and there were a few of my friends who had skived school or a few of the older guys who were surfing and you could see it was perfect.
And as your surfing develops, so does your taste in waves. When I was in my first year at school I was wanting two to three foot clean perfect little waves and by the time I got to fifth year I was probably after five or six foot or Middens or something like that, you know. But, it was, I just remember I just had a real kind of strong affinity for the place up here, you know. It’s a… There’s something quite special about growing up in place like this and surfing, and because it’s, it’s kind of, it’s not your typical surfing place, you know. It’s not palm beaches, it’s not white sandy, you know, it’s hardcore but it’s honest.
