How did it get its name? Clammy death? I think it came about actually by the wartime frogmen, because they used oxygen rebreather sets and they were governed to 30 feet of water and it was the first time, I think, divers had experienced diving, swimming like a fish, if you to term it, and they used every method that they could to keep warm because sea temperature although it doesn’t vary very much from 50 to 55 degrees winter and summer, that’s only half of body heat and literally to loose 12 degrees of body was nearly fatal so they had to find anything they could to keep themselves warm, and what they came up with was these Sladden suits, they were named after the person who invented them, Sladden, and they were front entry and then tied up with a comber button and they were always damp and wet when you got into, and I think that was when the word was termed clammy death because as soon as you subjected them to pressure, i.e. going down, it squeezed all the air out, what clothing you had put on underneath creased up and pressed against your skin and when you finished diving with one of them and you came out, you’d look like a ruddy road map.
