"You use sound as a means of communication."

You use sound as a means of communication. When you have a diver swimming in front of you, one of the things on a pre-dive, discussing a pre-dive, we always emphasise you never touched a diver, you never touched a diver underneath the water because it could have the effect of giving them a fright, so what we used to use and whatever we had in our hand by just swimming up and tapping his bottle, and the ringing sound used to bring his attention to you straight away.

Sound travels tremendously underneath the water. In some respect, it’s pretty frightening. In the commercial field when you were working in an environment when there were boats up above and their engines were going, you were very, very cautious where you surfaced. On the other hand, when you were sports diving, etc, to hear a speed boat going overhead of you is a terrifying thing. You think it’s going to cut you up. It could be 50, it could be half a mile away from you but the noise- wow, it seems right above you. So in that respect noise is a good thing and a bad thing as far as divers are concerned.
