Stephen grew up in Tynemouth and learnt to surf through his father. Stephen owns the Tynemouth Surf Company and has an integral role in running the O’Neill Surf Championships.

The shop was opened by Stephen in 1995. As well as the shop there is a surf school and hire shop. Tynemouth Surf Company has also attracted the O'Neill Surf Championships to Long Sands Beach. The competition attracts some of the the sport's top competitors.
