Sybil Howard
Sybil belongs to: Cullercoats Community Centre
Sybil was born in the West End of Newcastle. She moved to Cullercoats in the mid 1970s with her husband. Sybil is an active member of Cullercoats community life. She helped raise funds and build the Cullercoats Community Centre and helps organise fundraising events for the RNLI.
Sybil was interviewed by Carl Greenwood on 1 March 2006. The interview took place at Cullercoats Community Centre and lasted 26 minutes and 15 seconds.
The sound of the maroon
"Sounds. The maroon. And I’m heartbroken because they don’t send it off now"
Sounds. The maroon. And I’m heartbroken because they don’t send it off now. I don’t think they’re forbidden to send it off, someone thought they were. This is the two maroons, and if you know anything about lifeboats, everybody in the village stops when it goes, because you can hear it everywhere. One is to say to be ready, two, they’re in the water. So when one goes you listen and two or three seconds you’ll hear the other one. They’re the fastest launching crew in the British Isles, did you know that? They told you that, did they? They’re very proud of that.
And the maroon, to me, meant something, and I do believe when Robert, if you’re out in a problem out at sea and you’re frightened and you hear the maroon, you automatically think, “thank God, they’re on their way.” Now they don’t hear that, and I think, you know, I don’t know what I’ would do if I was out there and I didn’t hear it. But the maroon to me is Cullercoats.
