The first surfers in Saltburn
"Well a friend of mine went to the library and saw this book called ‘Surfing- the Sport of Kings’"
Well a friend of mine went to the library and saw this book called Surfing: The Sport of Kings, and he thought it was a good sport, and he went home and got some foam from ICI, and made a surfboard. The first one the rails collapsed because the resin attacked the rails, so he had to go back to the drawing board and a second one was better. And then he made a board, he was a seaman at sea, and then he made a board for John Wroughton, and John Wroughton was also at sea, and they shared one wetsuit between them in those days, and then Ian was the third one and he made a board for me and I was the fourth.
Well really we had nobody to copy so we had to do our own thing and improvise and then some surfers from Cornwall came and we learnt, we honed our skills copying them.
