Clay pipe smoking competition
"I used to smoke the clay pipes"
I used to smoke the clay pipes. We have what is known, the week before the Victorian Smokers Evening, there is a smoking competition, where you’re given, or you buy a clay pipe, you’re given a fill of tobacco, you’re given two matches, you’re allowed to use the two matches, you light you pipe and the one who keeps their pipe going the longest wins the competition. I did a number of years ago win that three times running. However, I have now given up- the last time I was really, well, basically, violently sick. So I gave up smoking the pipe. It still goes on, people still do it.
I think my winning time was about something like fifty four minutes. But again, that has been certainly bettered a few times. There are one or two people still smoking in the brigade, not many, but there’s a few.
