Come On In
Four museums and galleries in the North East will be hosting open days aimed specifically at disabled and Deaf children and adults.
The Come On In events, which take place in early March, are free to attend and include the options of free guided tours, BSL interpreters and free transport for those who find using public transport difficult.
Rob Latham, Equalities and Access Officer at Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, says:
“This is a chance for people to come along and let us know what they think of our museums and galleries. Everyone is welcome and we can arrange assistance such as BSL interpreters and guided tours for groups or individuals.”
The events take place at South Shields Museum & Art Gallery on Thursday 1 March, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens on Friday 2 March, the Laing Art Gallery on Monday 5 March and Segedunum Roman Fort on Monday 5 March.
Visitors to the events will be able to see exhibitions including Northern City Renaissance at the Laing Art Gallery, which features a magnificent painting of the city, commissioned by Sting.
At Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, a new exhibition called Art for Sunderland will be on show, exploring how the artworks in the museum’s collections came to be there.
At South Shields Museum & Art Gallery, visitors can get up close to creepy crawlies in Creature Corner and tuck into homemade cakes in the Museum’s Victorian Pantry.
Visitors to the event at Segedunum Roman Fort in Wallsend can take in the view over the remains of the fort from the 35 metre high viewing tower, and soak up the atmosphere inside the only reconstructed Roman bath house in Britain.
