Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums (TWAM) is linked with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in South Africa through an arrangement to work jointly on exhibitions, exchange information and promote contact between people living in Tyne & Wear and people in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Situated on the coast of the Eastern Cape, Nelson Mandela Bay is a metropolitan area that is home to over 1 million people. It includes Port Elizabeth, which is the fifth largest city in South Africa, as well as the towns of Uitenhage and Despatch and surrounding rural areas.

Port Elizabeth is a major seaport and industrial city, with a large car production industry. Its unspoilt beaches and its position as the gateway to stunning scenery and safari opportunities attract a growing number of tourists.

Nelson Mandela Bay has several fascinating museums, including the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, in the centre of Port Elizabeth, and the Red Location Museum, in Port Elizabeth’s New Brighton township.
