Discovery Museum awarded £250,000 to develop new gallery

Discovery Museum in Newcastle has been awarded a grant of £250,000 from the DCMS Wolfson Foundation to develop a new interactive gallery about the making of modern Tyneside.

Hazel Edwards, Manager of Discovery Museum says:

“We are delighted that Discovery Museum has been granted the funds to develop this project. It is a very exciting development for the Museum and will allow us to tell the story of how Tyneside came to be such a diverse place, in an interactive and family friendly way. ”

The new gallery will tell the stories of real people who moved to Tyneside in search of a better way of life from the 19th Century to the present day. As well as the memories and experiences of individuals and communities, the gallery will draw on a wide range of material including extensive archival records such as the census, other official documents and personal papers plus a wealth of objects from Tyne & Wear Archives &Museums’ nationally important maritime, science and industry, archives and art collections.

Material from TWAM’s social history and costume and textile collections will bring to life the stories of the many people who made or continue to make Tyneside their home.

Ged Bell, Chair of the Joint Archives & Museums Committee says:

“The new gallery will combine a dynamic and immersive audio visual experience with research facilities to deliver a visitor experience unrivalled by anything currently available in Discovery Museum. I am delighted that the Museum has been awarded this grant to develop the gallery and look forward to seeing the end result.”

Discovery Museum will work with local communities and individuals to develop the content of the new gallery which will open to the public in 2013.
