Student artwork unveiled on billboard

Young people from the region will have their artwork displayed on a billboard outside Newcastle’s Laing Art Gallery.

The students, who study at Newcastle College, Gosforth High School, Wolsingham Community College, Dame Allan’s school and Ponteland High School have worked with artists, designers and Laing Art Gallery staff to explore the artwork of 19th century artist John Martin and to produce a piece of artwork which will be displayed on a huge billboard opposite the Laing Art Gallery.

They have been taking part in the Visual Dialogues project - a partnership programme between Tate Britain, Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, Manchester Art Gallery, Museums Sheffield and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.

Julie Milne, curator of the Laing Art Gallery, says:

“The group has been looking at the ways in which John Martin’s paintings link with life today and they have also produced a piece of artwork which includes work by each member of the group. This artwork has been turned into a giant poster which will be on show outside the Gallery for the next few weeks.”

The billboard shows a design of jigsaw pieces, each of which has been created by a different member of the group.

Charlotte King, from Newcastle College, says:

“It’s been such an amazing experience to work with the Laing Art Gallery.”

Genevieve Devine, from Dame Allan’s School, says:

“Visual Dialogues has given us great opportunities.”

Manpreet Kambo, from Gosforth High School, says:

“It was a new and exciting experience with other young artists.”

The Laing Art Gallery is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 2pm to 5pm. Admission is free.
