Explore Tyne & Wear’s sporting heritage!
From model boat racing to rowing on the Tyne, there’s something for everyone in our programme of fun children’s events, community research projects and fascinating talks, trails and exhibitions.
Played in Tyne & Wear is a partnership project between the five Tyne & Wear local authorities, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and English Heritage. It accompanies the recently published Played in Tyne & Wear book, written by architectural historian Lynn Pearson, which documents the architectural and cultural heritage of sport in Tyne & Wear.
Have a go at a sport you’ve never tried before, explore hidden sporting venues in the heart of Tyne & Wear’s cities, research the history of your local club, or discover the incredible stories of the North East’s sporting heroes and the sites of their adventures.
The majority of events are free but booking is essential - booking information is included with the events listings. Simply click on the sidebar to see what's on each month. We'll be adding events throughout the Summer so do check back regularly.
