Episode 4
Alexander Millar was born and raised in the small mining community of Springside, just outside Kilmarnock on the west coast of Scotland, but moved to Newcastle in 1976. He became a professional artist in 1988, using the people and everyday scenes of the North East as his inspiration.
In association with Washington Green Fine Art Publishing, 'Alexander Millar: Working Man', which opens at Great North Museum: Hancock in March 2011, will be a celebration of the eponymous figure, the 'Gadgie Man', that has hallmarked Millar's style, and is the embodiment of the working class people of the North East who have inspired his work.
Conjuring the nostalgia of a bygone era when the North East's industrial identity was at its peak, these often romantic and definitely humorous paintings have seduced people of all ages, and become iconic figures.
Episode 3
March 2011 sees the opening of 'Ben Cook: Littoral Drifter' at The Hatton Gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne. The exhibition features works from Ben's Surfing Landscape series.
Based in Cornwall, Ben divides his time between making art and surfing. This exhibition is a retrospective of work from the last five years, and all the work in the exhibition relates to surfing in some way.
In this episode Ben explains more about the Hatton's drawing commission, the exhibition in general, and the differences he has found between surf culture in the South West and the North East.
Episode 2
London born twin artists Amrit and Rabindra are contemporary British artists of international standing whose award winning paintings have been recognised as constituting a unique genre in British art.
The recent retrospective of their work at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens spanned over twenty years and featured some of their most famous pieces and recent public commissions.
The Singh Twins say:
“Our work bridges many worlds, the ancient and the modern; fusing both Western and Eastern aesthetics elements, using a traditional art form to deal with contemporary issues. Our aim is to introduce wider audiences to the beauty, richness and continuing value of tradition within contemporary art and society.”
Episode 1
In this episode Newcastle based artist Laura Lancaster talks about her new works using watercolour which are showing at the Laing until 5 Jan 2011.
Lancaster's work is based on photographs of strangers found in charity shops, junk shops or in the street.
