Coins

British fifty pence
On one side of this 50p coin you can see the head of Queen Elizabeth II, on the other you will see a picture of Britannia.
Compare it with this coin from about 140AD.
Roman Coin

Can you see the head of the Emperor, Antoninus Pius? He was the adopted son of Emperor Hadrian and became emperor after he died.

For centuries British coins have copied Roman designs with the monarch’s head on one side. Fifty pence pieces have only been around since 1969 but Britannia has been on coins since 1672, first on halfpennies and farthings but later on pennies. Keep your eyes open for old style bronze pennies - they sometimes turn up where you least expect them!
