| Romans
roads are very straight and direct. They are still some of the best
routes to take when traveling around Britain. |

| Part
of The Great North Road, now the A1, was originally Dere Street, a
Roman road going from York to Scotland. It crossed the River Tyne
at Corbridge before following the route of the A68. Journeying southwards
the A1 joins up with Watling Street, which goes all the way south
to London. |
