On
Thursday 17th March 2005, Class 2 at Thropton First School
had a Roman Day.
|
|
| "At
the beginning of the morning a potter came into the classroom and
told everyone about the Romans and what they had invented." |
|
"After
break three different groups went and did three different things.
Some made pots, some cooked and some did arty, crafty things.
We made Roman sandals, laurel leaf wreaths and Roman soldiers." |
Making
pots
"We met a potter called Graham Taylor, he did pots in a factory.
He didn’t
bring the factory though he did bring pots that were done by foot. He brought
his potters wheel to show us how pottery was done. He sat at the wheel and
starting turning the wheel around." |
|
| "I
can’t really describe it, but using the wheel was like climbing
the stairs. Your right foot on the top stair and the left one on
the other and you pushed. He was making clay into a shape." |
|
"Then
we got split into groups and my group made a face pot. I thought
Jake's was good. I made mine into a different shape it was
hard. The potter took it away to go in a hot oven that is over
twice
as hot as a normal oven. It was ten times as hot!" |
Food
for a feast
"In the Staff Room a cooking group were making all sorts of delicious things
for the feast in the afternoon."
|
|
 |
"Miss
Hodgson’s group were quite messy as they were making lots
of Roman things." |
| "Everyone
was rotating around and by lunch time all of Class 2 had tried
everything." |
|
 |
"After
lunch Jo Catling came and the whole school went into the Hall
and listened to her talk about Roman artefacts." |
"Then
Class 2’s Roman soldiers got ready for a battle with
the Celts." |
|

|
"Before
everyone went home the entire school had a Roman feast and found
the food quite delicious." |
